ST. JOHN'S WOMEN IN MUSIC

Logo & Branding


St. John's Women in Music (SWIM) is a community arts organization devoted to breaking down barriers faced by women in the music industry. Using the acronym as the organization’s primary name and logo I created a modern word-mark with both artistic and professional appeal. To emphasize the rich visual and cultural associations of the word “Swim,” I explored visual representations of sound waves and audio static to connect the local musical community with St. John’s coastal geography allowing them to cultivate a brand identity that is community specific while also having universal appeal.


Based on the typeface Brandon Grotesque Bold, the letter forms have been fragmented by sharp vertical lines and then staggered to create a logo that is dynamic and active. Using strong graphic lines to define the letters, the logo associates the rhythm of waves on the water with the pulsating patterns of sound-waves functioning as both the brand's word-mark and icon.
